The question of wheather UFO's are real is not what we should be asking.  We should be asing what do they want.

As with any scientific/military expedition, observation and evaluating the enemy and knowing the enemies plan of defense before attacking is true in all military exercises even during the Roman Empire.

Even today our military observe our enemies with high tech drones before we launch an attack on our enemies.  We have today remote controled fighter drones to not only spy on our enemies but also tell about the strength of our enemies and what would be the best action for neutralizing them.

So, if we are capable of that, what would stop the UFO's from sending they're drones to gather info before they attack in the year 2012?
